This is the original recipe specifying Bulleit bourbon and featuring the signature flamed orange twist garnish. Some modern versions use other coffee liqueurs, but Jon Santer originally preferred rum-based Tia Maria.

Combine , , and in a mixing glass half-filled with ice.
Stir until chilled, about 15 seconds.
Strain into a chilled coupe.
For the flamed orange twist, cut a piece of orange zest about the size of a silver dollar.
Hold the zest skin side down several inches above the drink.
Light a match and use it to warm the skin side of the zest.
Quickly squeeze the twist toward the match, allowing the oils to briefly burst into flame and shower over the drink's surface.
